Balancing Your Nursing Career and Home Life

Becoming a mom is one of the most rewarding accomplishments, however working full time as a nurse, being a wife and full time mother is something no one prepares you for! Before the additional responsibilities of being a mother and wife were added on to my plate, life was, how can I say, more manageable LOL! I found that organization and planning is one of the key components that have helped me keep my sanity.

The amazing part of nursing is the flexibility and the many different specialties one can do. There are nurses who enjoy day shift and those who prefer night. The day shift works best for me and the best thing about working on an outpatient unit is the ability to work a set schedule. Plus, there are no holidays and weekends which is another perk. Having a set schedule allows me to schedule my sons’ activities and appointments. Planners have become an important asset in my life. I bring it everywhere I go. It allows me to stay organized as much as I can and have some sense of what’s going on for the week or month. Of course, things don’t always go as planned. Life happens! However, organization and time management are vital for me!

Nursing can be a stressful job so I believe it is important to separate nurse life and home life. I try not to bring home issues to work and vise versa. I’ve come in contact with a lot of nurses who bring their home life to work and it reflects on the care given to the patients. Patients can sense when a nurse is not having a good day or carrying extra baggage of emotions from their personal life. I like to focus my attention on the present and provide quality care to my patients. It improves their care, hospital experience, as well as my day. When I come home, I completely forget about work. Home is my time to enjoy my family. Well, let’s be honest, there are times where I may vent to my husband about the day, but once I get it out, it’s done.
