Semester Success Tips!

Hey students!!!! Classes are in session and I know you may be a little nervous, but I am happy to share some tips with you. I remember starting nursing school and I was extremely nervous. After the pep talk that our instructors gave us about having no life, no time to work, and don’t even think about getting into a relationship (which I was already in one with my now husband) I knew it was real deal! Here are some tips that will help you succeed!

  1. Organization is key! During the first week of nursing school you will be given tons of information. Your brain will fill like it’s on overload. My best advice is for you to get a planner. Planners are so important to keep you organized. You are able to plan out your month, week and day. Here’s a link below to some great planners! 2. Note Taking. It is so helpful to take detailed notes while in lecture. Highlight all the key points that your instructor emphasizes. These may be questions on the exam. I remember recording some of the lectures on my phone if I was not in the mood to take notes or if it was a concept that I was having difficulty grasping.

  3. Study! I would suggest you study every day after lecture for at least an hour. This will help prevent you from cramming before an exam. Also, go back to the concepts in lecture and read it in your textbook! I was not a big reader prior to nursing school, but it forces you to become one!

  4. Rest. Make sure you get plenty of rest. It will help you stay alert and focused in lecture and during an exam. Plus, it is important for your overall health. Along with rest, eat healthy and try to exercise as much as you can.

  5. Relax!!!! Find ways that will help you relax and reduce anxiety. Nursing school can be stressful, but if you find the tools that help you relax, it will make a world of difference. In the beginning of my nursing school experience, I let my nerves get the best of me at times. Even to the point where I didn’t pass 2 exams! Not because I wasn’t prepared, but because I let my nerves take over and I couldn’t concentrate on the exam.  I then found a way to reduce my anxiety. Before exams, I got plenty of rest and got to the testing location early. Prayer was a major outlet for me. I spent time with God to calm my nerves and reminded myself that He got me here for a reason and has given me the strength and knowledge to get through my exams. I also went to meet with my instructors to talk about ways that will help me reduce my anxiety.

I hope these tips help you! Praying for a successful semester!

XOXO,

Nurse Ish
